The biographies of Wolfgang Oehme and Carol Oppenheimer.

Wofgang Oehme

Wolfgang Oehme is a renowned landscape architect whose designs have transformed the American landscape scene.

Born in Chemnitz, Germany, he received his degree in Landscape Architecture at the University of Berlin. He arrived in the U.S. in 1957 and, unable to find the plants he needed to create his landscape designs, he began working with horticulturists and nurseries to produce the unique perennials and grasses which would become an integral part of his design signature.

Mr. Oehme has designed public parks and commercial, institutional and residential gardens all over the United States and in Germany. He established the landscape architecture practice of WOCO Organic Gardens, LLC with Carol Oppenheimer in 2008 after leaving the Washington, DC landscape architecture firm, Oehme, Van Sweden and Associates, of which he was a founding partner.

Mr. Oehme is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He is a recipient of the Robert White Medal of Honor (2002), the Landscape Design Award (American Horticultural Society, 1992), the Distinguished Service Award (Perennial Plant Association, 1987) and numerous other awards.

He coauthored the book Bold Romantic Gardens and is the subject of Ornamental Grasses, Wolfgang Oehme and the New American Garden, by Stefan Leppert. He is the subject of two German documentary films and his work has been published in countless books, magazines and newspapers.

Carol Oppenheimer

Carol Oppenheimer is a landscape designer and horticulturist.

Born in the U.S., she spent most of her early life studying and working in the Middle East (Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Iran). She developed a love of nature and farming while spending summers at her grandparent's country estate in the Lebanese mountains.

After moving to Maryland in 1983, Carol owned and managed an organic farm for 10 years until 2003, when she began work as a horticultural consultant. In 2004, she met Wolfgang Oehme and realized that they shared a great respect for nature, an eye for daring and creative design and love of plants.

Carol began an apprenticeship with Wolfgang to learn the principles of the "New American Garden Style." Wolfgang and Carol have worked on numerous residential and commercial projects and in 2008 formed the landscape architecture practice of WOCO Organic Gardens, LLC.
